Chapter 8 Madol Duwa
A Strange Gest
Next morning, Jinna cooked rice for the breakfast because they
were getting ready to go to the other side of the island. They wanted find the
truth about (discover) the mystery lying in that part of the island. Suddenly Upali heard Jinna yelling and he ran
where Jinna was. Upali saw Jinna was bitten by a snake and he was screaming in
pain. Upali ran and took their gun and he was going to shoot the snake. Jinna
didn’t allow him to do that.
After the snake went out from the cave Upali asked Jinna angrily
/ crossly “why didn’t you let me kill that snake?”
Jinna replied “She came because she loves you”
Upali surprised and asked Jinna “How would a snake love a
human? If she loves us why did she bite you?”
Jinna replied “She doesn’t love me, she loves you. She bit me
because I took you out from your beautiful family”.
Upali became obsessed and he ran to fetch Podi Gamarala. But
Jinna didn’t allow him and he said “this is not a severe pain because that
snake didn’t bite me properly”
Because of Jinna’s wound they couldn’t go to follow that boat
that night. After 8 days Jinna could stand up properly. When Jinna could stand
they went to sell manioc. (tapioca/cassava) They sold tapioca for 2 months. So
Madol doowa was famous in Colombo because every day they came to sell tapioca
and people started calling the vegetables that they grow in Madol doowa, “Madol
doowa” vegetables. / people started referring to the vegetables that they grow
in Madol doowa, as “Madol doowa” vegetables. People started visiting Madol doowa
every day.
One day a famous family came to Madol Doowa with Podi
Gamarala, and they ate rice cooked by Jinna. Jinna and Upali told them about the
mysterious things that they have faced such as the light and the boat. The
daughter of that famous family said “please don’t go to follow that boat until
we come next time. We ll come with my father’s gun.
Once day an official came to the island and they lend a loan to
Upali and Jinna and they said you should pay it back to us somehow. Then the
famous family came again to that island with their gun, and they were going to
follow that boat. They waited until the boat arrived but on that day they could
see neither the boat nor the light. Because of that the family thought that it
was a made up story and blamed Upali and Jinna and left the island.
The official came again and asked to pay the loan back but
Upali and Jinna couldn’t pay that because they didn’t have that much of money /
that amount. So the officer became angry and said “this is a land owned by the
government. You don’t have permission to cultivate in this land” Upali said
that when they came first to the island, it was covered with weed, and they put
a lot of effort to clear and cultivated in the island. That officer said “you
can’t cultivate in state-owned lands without permission”
Again Upali said to himself “will we have to leave Madol Doowa?”
that officer said “if one person buys this you must leave Madol Doowa. Even now,
there is a plenty of people who would like to pay a very high price to buy this
land. Podi Gamarala said “even if they
come again, we will never give away this island to them”.
