Chapter 3 - How I went to sea

 


About two weeks later, all his classmates except one made friends with him. That boy who is hanging up with him was quiet. Upali liked to go to school because of his new friends. But he didn’t like to study books yet. Their books were full of difficult words and very tiresome. But the principal was deadly serious all the time. The two sons of the principal became friends with Upali because they saw how much Upali liked to play out door. And when the principal saw that Upali and his two sons playing as soon as they return from school, the principal ran into the house and fetched his cane. As soon as Upali and his friends saw that, they ran as fast as they could. After they came home principal beat them and said “you had better do your school homework”.

About 4 months later, principal’s wife began to keep an eye on Upali. She said ‘’he thinks of nothing but playing”. When she saw them running in front of the yard she came out and shouted “don’t run fast, you will fall”. When they played with sand again she came out and shouted “don’t touch sand, you will get wounds all over your hands”.

They planned to do a mischievous thing, and fetched 4 frogs into the dining table. They put frogs inside the clay pots and one of the sons of principal was afraid of that and said “mother will trash us” and the principal came to have his dinner and asked what is inside the pots. He lifted the lid of the pot and said “what?” he jumped away from the table. That pot was broken into 1000 pieces! The frogs jumped all over the table. One of the sons was laughing and the other son was so afraid and principal beat his son who was laughing. He ran into the room crying. And the principal dragged the other son into the children’s room and locked the door. And there was a small window between the children’s room and his brother’s room. He called his brother through the window and the one who in the children’s rooms begged “can’t you get in here, I am scared’.

 Chapter 10 – Return of the prodigal One day Podi Gamarala came with the postman. Postman gave a letter to Upali, which was sent by his stepmother. The letter said that his father is very weak now and he has a heart attack but he cannot be cured. He is crying, telling that he wants to meet Upali before he dies. Upali was very said and he went to his village. He was living with his father for a few days. Suddenly his father passed away. Upali gave some money to his step mother and left his village to go back to Madol doowa. When they were in Modol doowa they met a beggar. He asked for food. He also lived with Upali and Jinna for a long time. They heard a good news from Podi Gamarala which said that, they got the ownership of Madol doowa forever. They were so happy. Chapter 4 – The Fight

  Upali’s father did not come to take him away for the Sinhala New Year holiday. Upali didn’t like to live Mr. Darmasinghas house. But he had a little liking because Mr Dharmasingha’s son and daughter were being his friends. He thought that if Mr Dharmasingha’s son and daughter had not been friends with him, he would have felt like he was in a deserted house. / he would have felt as if he were in a deserted house.   He did more and more mischievous things with his friends, but when Upali   is going to go to play, Mr Dhamasingha didn’t allow his children to go with him. On the first day of the Sinhala New Year festival, auspicious guest was one of the shop keepers. He came to the New Year table and talked with Mr Dharmasingha for a long time and he gave money covered with beetle leaves to Upali and Mr Dharmasingha’s children.
