 Chapter 10 – Return of the prodigal One day Podi Gamarala came with the postman. Postman gave a letter to Upali, which was sent by his stepmother. The letter said that his father is very weak now and he has a heart attack but he cannot be cured. He is crying, telling that he wants to meet Upali before he dies. Upali was very said and he went to his village. He was living with his father for a few days. Suddenly his father passed away. Upali gave some money to his step mother and left his village to go back to Madol doowa. When they were in Modol doowa they met a beggar. He asked for food. He also lived with Upali and Jinna for a long time. They heard a good news from Podi Gamarala which said that, they got the ownership of Madol doowa forever. They were so happy.  Chapter 9 – Floating Flame Jinna suggested to go back to the village for a week. Jinna’s suggestion made Upali think of home. Upali told himself “what could father be thinking now? what did my stepmother think about me after my disappearance?” • he must have won the match by now • you must be kidding • You must be hungry! Suddenly they heard Dadoria barking near the cave. They ran to the cave. They saw Dadoria jumping before a Python.                                                      A Strange Gest                  Next morning, Jinna cooked rice for the breakfast because they were getting ready to go to the other side of the island. They wanted find the truth about (discover) the mystery lying in that part of the island.   Suddenly Upali heard Jinna yelling and he ran where Jinna was. Upali saw Jinna was bitten by a snake and he was screaming in pain. Upali ran and took their gun and he was going to shoot the snake. Jinna didn’t allow him to do that. Chapter 7 - Madol Duwa

They went to that island. While they were going their boat was damaged by hitting on the rocks. After they went to that island they covered the damages of the boat with coconut shelves. They cultivated cassava / tapioca and they rested in a cave. On one night, they saw a light going up and down and they suddenly remembered that Podi gamarala told them that there are ghosts in Madol Doowa. Suddenly that light disappeared and they saw a boat and suddenly that boat disappeared too. Only two of them were there in Madol doowa. Podi Gamarala came to the island time to time and he saw the cultivation of Upali and Jinna. Podi gamarala praised them. About 10 months passed. On one evening Upali and Jinna were sitting on a rock. They were discussing that Upali’s father could be looking for them. Again they saw that light. This time they saw that the light was walking! They also saw that boat.   Upali still hated to study books but he went to school regularly, so his father didn’t blame him. The vacation started in cashew season. There was no cashew in trees because the children in the village pluck all cashews in the trees. But there was a land of cashew trees in the village which was owned by a rich man named Upasakappu. He did not allow children to pick cashews in his land. One day Upali and his friends planned how to pick cashews from his land. They have got a news about Upasakappu. One of them said “ Upasakappu used to wear a baniyan and a sarong, but today I saw that he was going wearing a coat and a trouser. I think he is going on a long trip.” Upali suggested “Let’s break the lock and go into the cashew land”.   6 or 7 months after the exam they had a vacation. They did usual things. When they were enjoying the vacation they heard about a brave character named ‘Suranchiya’. Upali and his friends got to know that he was a man who was born in this village but then he was living in Colombo. He usually robs rich people’s houses and gave the valuable things such as gold wrist watches, very expensive knives to the poor people in his village. Before 7 years he came to this village but he was missing after 2 days. This time, he has come to this village again after 7 years. Upali and his friends were surprised that he returned while they were in the village, because he is the man whom everyone loved the most in this village.   They also heard about Suranchiya is a man who can be friends with children. Chapter 4 – The Fight

  Upali’s father did not come to take him away for the Sinhala New Year holiday. Upali didn’t like to live Mr. Darmasinghas house. But he had a little liking because Mr Dharmasingha’s son and daughter were being his friends. He thought that if Mr Dharmasingha’s son and daughter had not been friends with him, he would have felt like he was in a deserted house. / he would have felt as if he were in a deserted house.   He did more and more mischievous things with his friends, but when Upali   is going to go to play, Mr Dhamasingha didn’t allow his children to go with him. On the first day of the Sinhala New Year festival, auspicious guest was one of the shop keepers. He came to the New Year table and talked with Mr Dharmasingha for a long time and he gave money covered with beetle leaves to Upali and Mr Dharmasingha’s children.
